  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 10-12 slices 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 and 3/4 cups (220g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240ml) whole milk
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240ml) boiling water

For the frosting:

  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2/3 cup (55g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups (360g) powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup (80ml) milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Gradually add wet ingredients to dry, mixing well. Carefully stir in boiling water to keep the batter moist and enhance chocolate flavor.
  5. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.
  6. For the frosting, beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add cocoa powder and powdered sugar, alternating with milk, until smooth. Stir in vanilla last.
  7. Spread a layer of frosting between the cake layers. Cover the entire cake with a generous layer of frosting. Decorate as desired.

Notes

  • If desired, add chocolate chips or chopped nuts to the batter for extra texture.
  • Ensure cakes are completely cooled before applying frosting to prevent melting.
  • For a garnished look, decorate with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or fresh berries.
