Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups of peeled and sliced apples (Granny Smith or Fuji work beautifully)
- 1 ½ cups of all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup of granulated sugar
- ½ cup of unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder
- ½ teaspoon of baking soda
- ½ teaspoon of salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- ½ cup of buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Toss sliced apples with 1 tablespoon cinnamon and set aside.
- In a bowl, combine 1 cup of flour, ¼ cup of sugar, and ½ cup of cold, cubed butter. Use a pastry cutter or fork to blend until coarse crumbs form.
- In a large bowl, whisk together remaining flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar. In another bowl, beat eggs, vanilla, and buttermilk. Mix wet into dry, then fold in apple slices.
- Pour batter into a greased 9-inch springform pan. Sprinkle crumb mixture evenly on top. Bake for 45-50 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
- While baking, prepare cinnamon drizzle by mixing powdered sugar, cinnamon, and milk until smooth. Drizzle over warm cake before serving.
Notes
- Ensure butter is cold for a crumblier topping.
- You can add chopped nuts or raisins to the batter or topping for extra texture.
- Use tart apples like Granny Smith for a balanced sweet-tart flavor.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days or refrigerated for up to a week.
- Reheat slices in the microwave or oven for a freshly baked taste.
