- 3 large egg whites
- 200 grams (1 cup) granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar or lemon juice
- Food coloring (brown, white, or desired shades)
- Optional: cocoa powder or edible dust for added realism
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a clean, dry bowl, beat egg whites until soft peaks form.
- Gradually add sugar while continuing to beat until stiff, glossy peaks are achieved.
- Mix in vanilla extract and vinegar or lemon juice.
- Divide the meringue if you wish to color different portions.
- Color the meringue with food coloring as desired for realistic mushroom caps and stems.
- Fill a piping bag fitted with a round tip with the meringue.
- Pipe small, rounded blobs for caps and elongated shapes for stems. Add a small dollop on top for the cap.
- Place on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 1.5 to 2 hours until crisp and dry.
- Turn off the oven and let the meringue mushrooms cool completely inside the oven.
- Optionally, dust caps with cocoa powder or edible dust for more realism. Attach caps to stems with melted chocolate if needed.
