Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- For the gravy:
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup heavy cream (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until evenly incorporated.
- Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape into oval or round patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add flour over the drippings and whisk to create a roux; cook for 1 minute.
- Gradually add beef broth while whisking to prevent lumps. Bring to a simmer and cook until slightly thickened, about 5 minutes. Stir in heavy cream if desired.
- Return patties to the skillet and spoon gravy over them. Simmer for 10 minutes to meld flavors.
Notes
- For a thicker gravy, add more flour or simmer longer.
- To reheat leftovers, warm gently in a skillet or microwave, adding a splash of beef broth or water to maintain sauce consistency.
- You can substitute ground beef with plant-based options for a vegetarian version.
