Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
- Colored icing and sprinkles for decorating
- Food coloring gel for spooky effects
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Whisk together flour, baking soda, and baking powder in a bowl. In a large bowl, cream softened butter and sugar until smooth. Add egg, vanilla, and almond extract (if using), blending well. Gradually mix in dry ingredients to form dough.
- Divide dough into two disks, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 1 hour.
- On a floured surface, roll out one disk to about ¼ inch thickness. Use Halloween-themed cookie cutters (pumpkins, ghosts, bats) to cut shapes. Place shapes on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes until edges are golden. Cool on wire racks before decorating.
- Decorate with vibrant icing, sprinkles, and food coloring gels to create spooky eyes, glowing effects, or mini jack-o’-lantern faces.
Notes
- Chill dough for easier rolling and better shape retention.
- Use food coloring gels for vibrant colors.
- Decorate ahead of time and store in an airtight container.
- For longer storage, keep cookies refrigerated or freeze for up to 3 months.
